Listen: New Daft Punk (from Tron)

Any of you who know me know that I’m a HUGE fan of our robot friends. So when I heard they were taking on the soundtrack for the sequel to one of my favorite childhood movies I could not have been more stoked. Up until now we’ve only heard little snippets from the film trailers but now we get our first real taste.

UPDATE: Just got a call from the Daft camp very nicely asking that the tracks be taken down which is not a big deal at all. You can still listen to them Here at the Official Tron Website. I cannot begin to express my excitement for this film and its music. Looking forward to seeing it all come together.

I dont really know what i expected (i’m a huge daft punk fan), but i’m really quite disapointed it doesnt really sound that different from any other half decent sounding soundtrack of late i’m sure it fits great in the movie and all that but c’mon i mean how long have daft punk fans got to wait to hear some funky electronic dance music, it feels like forever since they did what they do best(and human after all still doesnt count in my book as a daft punk album, its not a bad album but we all know that album was rushed out due to contractual obligations and they can do a hell of a lot better)Daft Punk when is your next real album coming out do you really think fans will wait forever….. bring out some goddamn dance music already!!! rrrRaaAArgh ……

  31. To all the people complaining because this isn’t four on the floor techno in the usual Daft Punk style, well, what the hell did you expect? It’s a movie soundtrack, so they can’t get away with sampling a bunch of disco tracks, looping the sample, throwing a 4/4 kick drum on it with high compression and pushing it out the door – it has to be original, which is something they’ve never done, everything they do is all sample-based. Not to mention that they have to follow in Wendy Carlos’s footsteps. And they’ve done a damn fine job.

  33. guys, this isn’t awesome. daft punk hasn’t made anything good since 2001. homework and discovery are two of the best albums ever, but they really have lost sight of what made them so good. this is your run-of-the-mill orchestral movie theme with some electronic piped in. it’s high quality music, but it could have been SO much better. i think KAVINSKY would have been a much better choice for a TRON movie theme. Daft Punk hasn’t made a UNIQUE, good tune for almost a decade. :(

  37. Holy shit! That stuff sounds very interesting! Yeah it doesnt sound like Daft Punk’s past stuff, but i can definitely hear all the Daft Punk flavor and nuances in it. Sounds like they really captured a world in the music from the sounds of it. Based on those clips, i think they are going in the right direction with it. Sounds like a normal soundtrack so it doesnt over power the movie itself, but at the same time still has the Daft Punk flavor everyone loves so it doesnt sound bland.

    Im noticing a lot of peoples comments on that post, they seem disappointed, they were expecting Daft Punk’s dance music sound. i think people are forgetting that, even though it is new Daft Punk music, that this is still score/soundtrack for a movie and not a Daft Punk album. Its a strange adjustment, but hopefully people appreciate it.

  39. Sounds like a movie score (what it is). For a movie score I think it’s driving, ethereal, and… awesome. Great job guys. For all the dance fans – I’m sure they’ll come out with something great (not movie score related) to make all of you very happy.

  41. I’m not a big fan of Daft Punk as I hate dancey music, but those music tracks sounds FANTASTIC. I might become a Daft Punk fan after all, if only for that album alone. :-)

Disney released a new trailer for Tron: Legacy yesterday as well as some of the score composed by one of my favorites Daft Punk . Tron is in my top 3 movies to see this year and I really hope I am not disappointed. Primarily I am worried the storyline being flat and the director relying on the visual effects to make the movie which seems to be the case more often than not lately. I hate to say it but I think that I will love this movie regardless. The art direction is so crisp and clean that it drew me in the moment I saw the first images that were released.   48. Chiwaw > it’s reminding me Mass Effect so well that I’ve already spotted one or two complete rip-offs of ME’s tracks. The whole tracks are heavily based on Jack Wall & Richard Hulick’s work, to say the least.

    I sincerely hope that Daft Punk isn’t REALLY behind those awfully made rip-offs and just signed to put their name onto it. It would be such a shame for ‘em, otherwise.

  60. i just don’t get it. its not daft punk, full stop. i don’t care if it’s a movie soundtrack or not, its still daft punks duty to push the boundaries of film soundtracking. this was meant to be amazing and it’s sounds so so average. when i think of tron, i think of heavy dark thumping songs like steam machine or superheroes. theres no use in saying ‘its a soundtrack and that’s why it’s different’, there are other artists (jon brion, michael andrews, wendy carlos even back in her day) who don’t make typical background music for films and it still works, even better than the corporate sh*t. so im sorry if you like your scores to sound boring and typical, but i for one don’t and so regardless of the fact this is a soundtrack, it should still sound enough like daft punk and not a disney fantasy which entales at least a few more dancier underscores… i hope this is just the orchestral part x

  70. Half of you goons are on the bandwagon, discovering them after the Discovery album..then seeking out Homework lol.. have any of you heard the Irreversible soundtrack? Seen the movie? Any of you own it on vinyl?
    Seen them live before they were big? i saw them back in 97.. and have followed Bangalter since 95/96. Still cant forgive One more time tho lol.
    The point is they are acomplished musicians.. they aint a pop act..popular yeh, due to wordwide success.
    This is a movie soundtrack.. go watch Electroma if you want a Daft movie.
    Hopefully they record a new album afterwards and go back to their roots..
    they were the ideal choice for Tron Legacy..
    Disney + Tron + Daft Punk + Olivia Wilde ..im happy:)

  72. These are just clips of only 6 songs. They have 24 full songs on this soundtrack (confirmed) on a rumoured double record how can you judge the whole soundtrack from 6 CLIPS? They sound interesting and fit Tron well. All bands, duos, solo artists have to evolve with music and that’s what daft punk are doing if not at least experimenting. Listen to it and enjoy it. Only reason im going to see this movie is to listen to Daft Punk..might take a blindfold so i don’t get distracted :)

  93. when it comes to a score, anyone could have done this. I really hope there is something more to the soundtrack than this. Look, after making a big deal for over a year that Daft Punk did the score to this whitewash cyberpunk film, I would hope that there is some originality to the score. I really pray that the final release proves epic. If not, it’s just another score to a Disney film….. Please prove me wrong Daft Punk and don’t just jizz some simple arpeggio “this is what is happeningso this is what it sounds like” soundtrack on the masses. Because if you do, you sre no better than any other composer but hey…..you have a bigger house than me so what does my opinion matter,

  118. The clips sound strong, but being a Daft Punk fan I think the clips are too short to make any real judgement on the music. The Guys often make tracks that are quite lengthy and diverse in content so these little snippets are not enough to revel in. The rest of the tracks’ content will be able to tell the direction and quality of Daft Punk’s work on the soundtrack. But still I’m totally geeking about the movie and the soundtrack, IM COUNTING THE DAYS!

  130. A most striking difference — of what’s been released so far — is that these previews largely contain melodic minor modes, which is common in contemporary electronic dance music. There are some cool parts, but so far, the ostinato-rich riffs sound reminiscent of Philip Glass or even Hans Zimmer’s work for Inception.

    Bursts of feedback and characteristic “Daft distortion” aside, what Daft Punk are missing from Carlos’ unique score is that she explored many exotic realms of awkward intervals, dissonance, and in her broader work, microtones. While I tend to be a bigger fan of Carlos’ more hummable stuff, understanding this — the alien aspects of the music complementing the then-new computer animation — is key to understanding why the original Tron score worked for the movie it supported. Of course, virtual reality is a lot more familiar to a mass marketplace today.

    But still, the visual aspects of Tron: Legacy looks like a sensible extension of its predecessor given today’s technology. So far, the music isn’t equivalent. I keep hoping for Daft Punk remixes of the original Tron theme.

  147. a couple things you guys arent noticing. . . these are just 6 tracks at the most, from what ive heard they recorded around 20 tracks for the tron soundtrack. . . what i mean to say is that this is the incidental music for the movie. . . if you are familiar with soundtracks, they follow a totally different structure than normal pop albums, in other words, there are interludes and breaks . . . . daft punk themselves have used tracks to bridge in-between their more dance stuff. . . “make love” off of human after all is an example, and there are examples on discovery as well. . . i suppose this is a more extreme version of that album structure, but knowing daft punk – they love suspense. . . so these tracks might be surrounded by dance tracks on the actual album and movie. . . . the original tron soundtrack by wendy carlos is structured that way. . . incidentally, human after all is a way underrated album

  170. removing wendy carlos’s score is like removing john williams score for star wars, something that shouldnt have happened. most of the tracks sound like remixes of previous tracks, nowhere near the coolness of the carlos’s score that builds intensity. damned you punk ass 20 year olds and your stupid ideas and ruining the franchises of my youth. damn you to hell lol.
    star wars episode 1 all over again, 15 year wait for jar jar binks.
    i bet bridges and the originals are in 10 minuts of this wich will largley dismay trons already established huge fanbase in trade for obnoxious 20 year old fans.

  172. tron was a terrific movie largely because of its music, much like every other terrific film. id rather see movie studios paying 200 billion for music scores than visual effects. Every great film has a great soundtrack behind it and a terrific sequel feels like an extra 2 hours of the original. when franchises/remakes remove original music they disconnect from that and generaly tank thier huge fanbase in trade for obnoxious 20 year olds.

  174. what makes a terrific movie? story+music+actors, visual effects are last and unfortunately the thing most studios today think makes the film. thier are plenty of classic star trek and original twilight zone shows with shoestring budgets that beat 200 billion budget micheal bay movies, just because music is the glue that holds a tv show/movie together.
    i hate franchises dropping music, its why they tank or fans are replaced by obnoxious 20 year olds and they end up being pale immatations of thier former selves *cough bond (sucking from after more (a view to a kill was terrible and had crappy bond music) except for goldeneye wich had watered down bond music, the last good bond movie),star trek, superman (with returns although 3 and 4 sucked and had watered down superman music as well replacing williams), terminator (dropping fidels score sucking since 3), batman (elfmans score terrific over begins), mission impossible (2 sucking for dropping 1’s music) mortal kombat (2 sucking for dropping music) need I go on…

    music is just as important as a character in a movie. star trek 2009 sucked for removing star treks music, now tron is in ruins lol. well its not terrible but no where near wendy carlos.

But I still hear their style in this snippets, I think that their sounds matured and sound more serious, but I kinda miss their works with message, meaning and reason.

  211. The fact is, it may be the Dafters doing the songs, but in the end it’s an original movie score. They had to stick within ‘movie’ guidelines, meaning it was less of an album and more like movie background music.
    People have to remember it’s a MOVIE, not necessarily a Daft Punk ALBUM… Be wary of ridiculous expectations.
