Seemingly out of nowhere today we got this killer b-side from washed out which is set to appear on the british release of their single “Amor Fati” which finds Ernest bringing out a little darker side of the project (maybe halloween was on his mind?) trading in the usual warmth of smooth waves for bouncy chilled out minor keys on “Call YOu Out”. If you haven’t already investigated Washed Outs fantastic release Within and Without which came out earlier this year, I highly recommend it, and if you’re on the fence, just give this little number a whirl and you’re bound to be hooked.
(first thing on google image search when you google “rocket juice”)
What happens when you put one of the most talented song writers on the planet (Damon Albarn of Gorillaz/Blur fame) in a room with one of the best bess players of all time (Flea of RHCP) and throw in a legendary jazz drummer (Tony Allen)? You get….well, if you ask me you get dad rock. BUT it’s probably the coolest dad rock ever (no offense Wilco) Check out video someone snapped of the bands live debut over the weekend, a track called “Poison according to the setlist, which features Damon on vocals though through interviews they’ve deemed the collaboration largely instrumental. Also….seems like they coulda picked a more fitting name, amirite?
So I’ve lived in a lot of places that the Praying Mantis calls home, but have yet to ever cross paths with one here in western WA. In fact, they don’t really like it here.
According to the following map, it seems like they dig the desert or equatorial parts of the planet:
Did you know that after mating the female mantis EATS THE MALE TO DEATH. This plays in to all kinds of sexist stereotypes that I wont touch with a 10 foot internet pole. Over the weekend, Neal The Midnight Cowboy found this sucker hanging on his screen door.

Somehow science has decided that today, October 31st, Halloween, is the day that the 7 billionth person has entered the world. How we could possibly know this is beyond me. More important to our lives is how we got so many damn people into our space in such a little time.
This helps explain using relaxing talking and pretty colors:
Over the weekend I found a video from my friend where her dog Scooter is howling/barking at the internet while a video of dogs being dogs is playing. Not knowing how my own dog, Chowder 5000, would react, I of course called her over to play the video of Scooter. Thanks to the mobileness of the iPhone, the following are the results:
End co-worker Neal The Midnight Cowboy was shocked to find out that Chowder 5000 was making both the high pitch cute howl AND the gravel-in-your-motorcycle-engine noise simultaneously. I’m curious to see if you’ll help continue the loop and add to it?
:E GregR
PS. If you’re a Formula 1 fan, Chowder kinda sounds like off throttle exhaust creating downforce…

We’ve been talking quite a bit about the upcoming 20th anniversary re-issue of U2’s “Achtung Baby”. The deluxe package will contain all sorts of goodies including b-sides, outtakes and probably most exciting: previously unheard music.
We got our hands on one of those tracks earlier today.
Chris Cornell recently sat down with Billboard to talk about his upcoming “Songbook” solo release. Taken from the recent tour of the same name the album has live/solo/acoustic recordings spanning Cornell’s entire career.
The tour went SO well that they aren’t just putting out a record, but they’re prepping dates for another run here in the near future
The record will be released in 3 parts starting tomorrow (November 1st) with “Songbook EP 1″. “Songbook EP 2″ then comes on November 15th with the full album coming on November 21st.
Check out EP 1 below:

Cornell has also been hard at work on the new Soundgarden record. He tells Billboard.com
“It’s mostly done,”
“We just need to finish a couple of songs and mix it, so that will be happening probably over the holidays.”
“It’s certainly not nostalgic. It’s definitely forward. It sounds to me exactly like it should sound — like we took a break and we got together and we’re making an album. I don’t think we’ve taken any dramatic new approaches to writing or recording, and yet there’s definitely changes. We’ve all had a decade-plus of more experience in writing and recording and took a long break… So it’s very refreshing and it feels to me like the next logical step in Soundgarden, creatively.”
VERY excited for that.
