pdx-skate

It’s very cool that a northwest city is getting this sort of national recognition.  Seattle is great and will always be tops in my book, however, over the years Portland has turned into such a cool city. The Wall Street Journal just did an article on how “Skate Friendly” the city is (in addition to being Pet Friendly, Environmentally Friendly, Tattooed Musician/Barista Friendly etc)

article from the Wall Street Journal

Skateboarding is illegal in downtowns across the country. Portland’s downtown is marked with “skate routes” featuring signs with a skateboarding stick figure. In most cities, skaters consider it a big victory when a skatepark is built. Portland is building a network of 19 skateparks scattered throughout the city. Skaters even have one of their own in City Hall: Tom Miller, chief of staff to Portland Mayor Sam Adams, rode into politics through skateboard advocacy and has continued pushing for skateparks from the inside.

It’s a transformation that began nearly two decades ago, when a bunch of Portland skaters built an illegal skatepark in a trash-strewn area under a downtown bridge. By 2020, skaters in this city of about 600,000 people will have just about every kind of terrain they could want. Five parks have already been built. The Ed Benedict skatepark, which opened in February in Portland’s southeast district, features built-in “street” obstacles such as ledges and stairs, where young skaters can be seen trying to flip their boards every which way.

red_hot_chili_peppers

Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith has confirmed that the bands 2 year hiatus will end this October.

“That’s the plan,” Smith tells Billboard.com. The band initially was going to take just a one-year break, however it turned into two after touring to support 2005’s “Stadium Arcadium.” “Everybody was like, ‘Y’know, I really like having this time off, not being a Chili Pepper and doing other things…It’ll be two years in September, so now we’re ready. You can’t force people to play when they don’t want to play or aren’t ready to play or whatever — not in our band, anyway.”

Smith expects bassist Flea and guitarist John Frusciante may come in with some musical ideas, but the group will mostly likely “do a lot of improvising and jamming and songs will come out of that, too. That’s what we usually do. I don’t know why it would be different.”

No prospective release date has even been considered yet, and Smith says he and his bandmates also “haven’t talked about” who will produce, though he acknowledges with a laugh that Rick Rubin, who’s produced the group’s last five studio efforts, “always ends up being the guy…But we haven’t discussed it.”

So in just over an hour I was able to make this Endfluencer video! If I can make an entry, then you clearly are WAY ahead of the curve because…well, I’m slow!

Despite my huge love of The End, I can’t be the biggest Endfluencer – besides I have a microphone and thousands of watts behind me!

Get on it – $5000 is up for grabs

pearljambackspacer9

The Pearl Jam guys are hosting an online scavenger hunt to reveal the artwork for their new record “Backspacer”

The artwork for the record was done by renowned graphic artist Tom Tomorrow.

“The artwork collaboration between Tom Tomorrow and the band for this album is so compelling, we felt like it deserved its own online gallery showcase,” said Tim Bierman, manager of the band’s Ten Club (and all around nice guy)

As a reward for finding all 9 pieces of art, the band is giving away a free download of the demo version of “Speed of Sound”, a new song from Backspacer.

You could do all that work and have a nice rewarding experience OR you could cheat and listen to the song right here.  Either way, it’s cool.

So we’ve had a lot of fun with the heat today, but all joking aside, some people are going to be in trouble with this heat – old people, i’m looking at you:

old-people

Yikes!

It’s over 100 degrees today, and likely close to that heat tomorrow. With the general lack of air conditioning around town some people (me) will hop in the car and take a drive to get the air flowing.

Not me.

One great way to get out of the house and go somewhere guarunteed to be cool is to head to the Ice Rink. Heather in Shoreline at the Highland Ice Arena emailed me suggesting that you come by and hang out. ITS FREE if you don’t skate and reasonably priced if you do want to skate. Plust they’re open until 10pm.

Wonder if they have sumo/skater suits?

Stay safe.

Do you like winter sports like ice skating?
Have you ever dismissed figure skaters as lame but secretly you are jealous that they can fly around in the air whilst spinning?
Have you opened the freezer and stuffed your enormous head in there for a few seconds for relief? (dont close the door if you try that!).

Stay Cool. Have a great summer. Talk to you next year.

Ya know how every year there is one or two movies that get universally good reviews, but for whatever reason…have a very limited release?

Wendy & Lucy, Rachel Getting Married, “Synecdoche, New York” are a few recent examples.

All I have heard/read are amazing reviews for this movie “The Hurt Locker” about army bomb techs in Iraq.  It’s only playing a couple places in the Seattle (Egyptian on Capitol Hill and The Majestic Bay in Ballard), but might be a great thing to do to get out of the heat.

Some info about the hottest day in Western Washington history

(from http://www.komonews.com/)

At 9:20 am, it was 91 degrees in Seattle. To put that in perspective, the last time it hit 100 degrees, it was 77 degrees at 9am

The lowest temperature recorded so far today was 71 degrees. That means we have shattered the record for warmest low temperature which was set.

Put another way, this is the first day ever that the temperature failed to drop below 70 degrees at some point during the day.

Other records that could be broken

*  Consecutive days at or over 90: 5 (Aug. 7-11, 1981). Current forecast: 4, Potential: 6

* Consecutive days at or over 85: 9 (Aug. 5-13, 1977). Current forecast: 9. Potential: 11

* Consecutive days at or over 80: 15 (July 30-Aug 13, 1977) — Current forecast: 11, which stretches through the end of the extended forecast. Potential: ??? (Incidentally in the ‘77 streak, the 14th was 79, there were three more 80s afterward.

* Number of 90 degree days in a month: 7 (July 1958)

* . Current forecast: 6. Potential: 7 Number of 90 degree days in a year: 9 (1958)

* . Through Tuesday: 5 with two more a slam dunk, and potential for a few more by next Monday. And there’s still August and early Sept. yet. Hottest July on record (high temperature): 81.4 degrees in 1958. (If current 7 day forecast verifies exactly, our avg. this month will be 81.25)

* Seattle daily records: Wednesday: 95, Thursday: 94. Friday: 93
